The essay sustains a view of teaching based on a dialogue, more specifically the teaching of Portuguese classical literature in the light of its dialogue with modern texts. By using both literary works and literary criticism, my refl ection follows various strategies for defamiliarizing our ways of looking, and breathing new life into literary texts. Among the classical corpus, I highlight Luís Vaz de Camões’ Os Lusíadas and Fernão Mendes Pinto’s Peregrinação in relation to modern authors, including Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen, José Saramago, and Herberto Helder.
