In this article I reflect briefly upon the reasons for teaching literature today, arguing for a more dynamic and interactive approach to literary texts. Taking into account the criteria for selecting and exploring literary works which I consider to be the most relevant and the most effective in fostering students’ affective, fruitful and lasting relationship with literature, I argue for the teaching of the novel Blindness, by José Saramago, in Secondary Schools, suggesting a few strategies for its approach in the classroom.
