First translations of Rilke in Portugal (1938-1942). The literary field and systemic dynamics

After providing an overview of the Portuguese literary scene towards the end of the 1930s, I will discuss the first translations of Rilke into Portuguese, by Paulo Quintela. Following my analysis of these translations through the norms established by Toury, I briefl y examine the immediate reactions these translations provoked along with the infl uence they exerted on Portuguese literature.
