The text analyses the main characters construction in Wim Wenders’ film Der Himmel über Berlin in relation to the city – Berlin. In the film, all the characters are presented intrinsically connected to the city. The city characterizes them and is characterized by them at the same time. Berlin is much more than the background of the film. Its history is alive on the streets and in the thoughts of the characters. These relations between the characters and the city are developed not only in the screenplay, in the dialogues and in the thoughts of the characters, but also in the film language: camera movements, mix of black and white and color images, plans and montage rhythm.
