Brazil has been home to many migrants and refugees. In this context, this study aims to map the profile of migrants arriving in Brazil and to understand the challenges of teaching Portuguese as a Language of Reception (PLAc), considering aspects that go beyond language. This is a theoretical study, whose framework is based on scholars who address migratory processes in Brazil, such as Uebel and Rückert (2017) and Junger da Silva et al. (2023), as well as authors who work on PLAc, such as Amado (2013), Bulegon and Soares (2019), Grosso (2010), Pereira (2017), and Sene (2017). The analysis revealed that migrants and refugees present diverse nationalities and profiles, and that PLAc is characterized by addressing urgent language-related needs, as well as social, cultural, and other related issues.
