The article analyzes “Mamelucos”, Mulattos and a few “Pardos” in São Paulo society during the 17th century. Based on post-mortem inventories the article highlights that the social classification and terms of miscegenation in São Paulo were created in the midst of the confrontation between the Portuguese laws against indigenous slavery and the slaving perspective of the “Paulistas”. “Mamelucos”, Mulattoes and a few “Pardos” were words used differently in relation to several other categories of that time.
