Abstract

The comet of 1577 has been associated with the history and the death of the King Sebastian ofPortugal (1578), and the 'forecasts' and assessments thatwere made before and after bis death. Furthermore, the authors of these publications participated in the scientific debates of the moment about the nature of comets. However, many of these chronicles and spanish news («relaciones de sucesos») about the passage of the comet had a political purpose to justify the future events, especially the union of Portugal to the Spanish monarchy.
