Abstract

This paper begins by showing the Portuguese origins of a personality and, following a biographical line of analysis - phylogenetic and ontogenetic - shows Francisco Coello de Portugal as a reputable and professional military man who also showed a clear vocation for geography and cartography. The production of cartography, in which he actively participated, gave him a great prestige and renowned institutions requested his collaboration and opened their doors to him.
