This article analyzes the Renaissance origin of the famous allegory which identifies Ancients with bees and Modems with spiders. Considering Erasmus of Rotterdam's role in the spreading of this metaphor, it deals with the process of elaboration of the symbol taking into account the relevance of Horapollo's Hieroglyphics, Isidore of Seville's Etymologies and Bartholomeus Anglicus' On the Properties Things.
