Based on several medieval lists of churches of the Diocese of Coimbra, we envisaged characterising the archdeaconry of Penela, one of the four deaconries of the diocese. The information available provides insight into the archdeaconry's spatial development (since the High Middle Ages), the Church's revenues, patrons and saints, as well as its contribution to 14th century policy of benefits granted to the clergy. This work will, therefore, provide valuable input on the medieval history of the diocese of Coimbra.
