Abstract

Since 2008 was the year of the Four hundredth anniversary of the birth of the Jesuit Priest António Vieira, the author was asked to deliver a series of conferences to celebrate the occasion, the first of which was held in the Auditorium of the Municipal Library of Mangualde. This paper was the product of said conferences. It includes relevant biographical and bibliographical records on Padre António Vieira, it discloses the author's reading of the Myth of Ourique in particular and of the History of Portugal at large, and attempts to interpret the reach of the Jesuit Priest's prophecy-utopia of the World's Fifth Empire, which he highlights in his sublime masterpiece História do Futuro.
