This research focuses on the concrete performance of D. Frei Luís de Santa Teresa, who governed the bishopric of Olinda from 1738 to 1754, describing it, fitting it into the territorial and political context of that period, interpreting and explaining it. This exercise attempts to highlight the information available on the activities of Portuguese bishops of Jacobean matrix, to understand their role as agents of the monarchy in the imperial context and to attest to what extent local conflicts could impact on the core of political life.
