May 2007 marked the eighth centenary of the composition (or manuscript edition) of the Poema de Mio Cid. The hero of the Cantar is Rodrigo Dias, whose extraordinary military skills earned him great victories and the title of Campeador. His invincibility became legendary in Hispania, disrupted by the ongoing wars of the Reconquest. The fame of Rodrigo Dias spread throughout the kingdom of Castile, where he had been born, to the territory that is present-day Portugal. This article explains why the author of the Cantar referred to the region of Coimbra and its political authorities and, in addition, why the 15th and l6th century chronicles that can be traced back to religious institutions in this city made reference to the Campeador and praised him.
