Abstract

This study analyses of the work of D. Afonso, son of Manuel I, as bishop of the diocese of Évora (1523-1540).

On the basis of a very fragmented and incomplete documentary collection, the author attempts to reconstruct the duties carried out by the distinguished prelate, taking him as an example, within the context of the Portuguese episcopate, of an archetypal prelate and prince in the tradition of the late Middle Ages and the beginning of the Modern Age, already showing signs of renewal through the Council of Trent. In addition to emphasising the princely nature of the man ordained to wear the mitre and the nature of his work, this study also helps to provide an understanding of episcopal justice, the training and behaviour of the clergy, pastoral visits and the religious practices of the faithful.
