Abstract

The author states that the Portuguese discoveries and expansion conduced in parallel to the preservation of tradition (for example through the crusades) and to the establishment of modernity (through the development of market economy in the form of "world-European economy", the acclamation of the superiority of the Christian civilisation or Portugal's integration in a "Europe" in construction). The author shall attempt to produce documented proof of the main changes and constancies.
