This paper is the author's insight on the historic process of the foundation of the Cistercian abbey of Santa Maria de Alcobaça, in 1152. After analysing the historic awareness of this "founding act" in the memory of the abbey's monks, from medieval ages to modern times, the author tries to produce further historic information regarding the monastery's early years, its institutional connections to Portuguese sovereigns and to other ecclesiastical powers, and the centralising role it played in structuring a network of medieval Cistercian abbeys in Portugal. Finally, a list of all the abbots that stayed in Alcobaça abbey between 1152 and 1220 is included and a few documents of primitive abbey chancellery are published.
