The bibliography available about the Portuguese economy during Salazar’s regime is already a very extensive one. However, one of the most important politicians of the Portuguese dictatorship, João Pinto da Costa Leite (Lumbrales), has been successively relegated to a position of secondary importance in the Portuguese historiography about that period. It is against this background that this essay was wrote, in an attempt to analyse and understand Lumbrales’ economical thought and his political action during
the construction of the Estado Novo.
