Abstract

This article intends to investigate the meanders of the Portuguese  narrative’s construction about Gregorio Lopez [c.1542-1596 ] nationality. The Catholic’s Church Venerable, first anchoret of the Western Indies, fascinated diverse groups throughout Europe, wherever his Vida was read, translated and  published. In the specific case of Portugal, it is possible to identify two moments in that reading: the first edition in Lisbon and its translation into Portuguese in 1675. In the aftermath of the so called Kingdom’s restoration of independence, the defence of Gregorio Lopez Portuguese identity can be
associated to a conception of mythical-religious nationality based on a local memory. What does Gregorio Lopez’s story in Portuguese History?
