This article is an excerpt of research that focuses on the archives of the National Secretary of Information (SNI), which holds documentation about Portuguese cine-clubs during the New State. This study focuses on more than 40 Portuguese cine-clubs from 1946 to 1968 and begun in 2015 as part of my thesis: “Filming under constraint: Portuguese Cinema during the New State (1933-1974)”, with a chapter dedicated to Portuguese cine-clubs. The aim is to understand how the State perceived this movement as well as the SNI’s functioning mode regarding Portuguese cinema during the dictatorship. This research also aims to be a contribution towards a comprehensive history of Portuguese cine-clubs, which has yet to be written.
