The First Republic labour movement is a topic that, concerning Braga, didn’t deserve proper attention, not knowing any investigation about this subject. To execute this paper, we utilized primary sources such as Braga generalist press, as well as Porto and Lisbon labour press, not existing primary manuscript sources at archives that are relevant to this study.
One of the reasons that led labourers to support the republicans on the establishment of the republican government was the promise of better living conditions, among them, the promise to stop the rising prices of the essential supplies and to end the tax on them. Promises that weren’t fulfilled. The change to a republican government didn’t improve labourers’ living conditions, which explain their persistent contestation against the republican governments.
