D. Miguel and the Jesuits: mutual fidelity to ancient traditions 1829-1834

Abstract

This article aims to provide answers to some questions related to the second entry of the Society of Jesus in Portugal, specifically the external and internal context that gave rise to it, the purposes it served, and the reasons that determined the second expulsion.
The author based her analysis on unpublished and secondary historical documentary sources, highlighting among the primary sources a repository of documents from the documentary collection of the Archive of the Portuguese Province of Society of Jesus.
A chronological-evolutionary methodology was followed in the reconstruction of the historical period under analysis, following the studies of relevant historians regarding the miguelist political and religious history.
As a representative of traditionalism and conservatism, the Society of Jesus constitutes itself as a fundamental instrument in the affirmation of the miguelist ideals and reinforcement of its cause, but Jesuits and miguelists had the destiny of their presence traced before the ideals of liberalism.
