Abstract

The starting point of these two research projects on science education was a curiosity about the schools ranking published in 2009 by the Ministry of Education, where the three schools of the Companhia de Jesus obtained different results. Searching for the reasons for such disparate results in similar institutions, we seek for a possible relation with their geographical and cultural contexts. Then we followed up this issue, focusing on the teaching strategies, namely demonstrations and "hands-on" experiments and extending the research to four public schools also from different geographical locations. The results suggest that teachers and teaching strategies play a vital role in the minimization of the factors that undermine students’learning.
