Abstract

Although main indicators suggest a rise in social role participation and in attitude flexibility regarding Portuguese women, the maintenance of traditional values based on gender differentiation is still verified as a classification which consigns them to a social standing perceived as dependent and subsidiary. Such a phenomenon becomes more apparent when concerning a group of low education Portuguese women. Contrary to what was expected, returning to school represents more than a conscious choice of transformation. It is a social imposition, which doesn’t encounter in the present school system the desired educational needs of these women.
