The Family Expressiveness Questionnaire (FEQ; Halberstadt, 1986) is designed to measure a family’s overall expressive environment and it includes items not only related to nonverbal expressiveness but also to emotionally expressive content. The present study analyzes the psychometric properties of the Portuguese version in a large general population sample. Construct validity was analyzed using Principal Components Analysis procedures, and the results show the existence of two factors model. The results show that the scale as an accurate internal consistency and temporal stability. The construct validity have been studied through the analysis of the correlations with the psychopathology measures (in particular, anxiety, depression, and stress), as well as the family environment measures (specifically, parental bonding and experience of parental care and neglect). The FEQ is a useful and valid scale to assess family expressiveness in the Portuguese population.Downloads
