This paper aims shedding some light on the charter reform by King Manuel I based on a case-study: the charter of King Manuel I to Porto de Mós. The study is divided into three parts: first, an analysis of the political context of the charters granted by King Manuel I and the process which led to the granting of the relevant charter; second, the royal rights assigned under the title during the rule of King Manuel I, compared to those granted by the Medieval charter; third, disputes between the House of Bragança and the people of Porto de Mós, arising from conflicting views regarding signeurial rural taxation.
