Between 1684 and 1689 the Episcopal Tribunal of the diocese of Viseu, presided by bishop D. Ricardo Russel, sentenced 122 defendants, secular and ecclesiasts who were trialled for illegal, moral and sexual, activities. This study will focus on the Ecclesiastical auditorium - a core institution of post-tridentine Episcopal power - by analysing its operational model and assessing its impact on the surveillance and discipline of the diocese's population and clergy.
