The following paper focuses on the effect of the "Restoration War" in Beira's province.
The portuguese independence restoration in the 1st December of 1640 unchained a military conflict of 28 years with Spain causing hard difficulties in the region's population.
The defence of our frontier not only obliged to construct and restore the fortifications but also a huge mobilization of soldiers what induced a waste of money, conducting to a taxes raise and creation of new employment.
Despite of the violence, the destruction, the deaths caused by the war in the frontier regions, its negative effects were felt also in all the province of Beira. Because of this a decrease was felt in the demography and also in the production of cereal and wine.
The population, the Viseu and Trancoso local government and the Viseu and Lamego diocese complain about the decrease of their profits.
