The portuguese revolucionary process initiated a major transformation of the country. An alternative educacional project emerged, based on the popular education associations. The development of the associative movement allowed for alfabetization and cultural animation among communities. The State supported those iniciatives during the revolucionary period. With this work, we would like to reconstruct the trajectory of the popular education project from its birth till the portuguese membership within the EEC, in 1986. The consolidation of the democratic regime in Portugal after 1976 had results on the educacional project. Popular education movements faced growing isolement. The State was caracterized by a fragmentated action, while the associations stood for a continuity elemento of this popular education project. Despite nacional and regional iniciative, the popular education project declined due to european convergence, associations’ crisis and transformation of adults education.
