On 22 June 2013, the University of Coimbra added one more episode to its secular history: the inscription of the University of Coimbra – Alta and Sofia in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
The purpose of this work is to improve knowledge of some principles that designed the application process, taking into account the contribution and influence of its main players on several levels (politics, rationale, theory and decisions). For that process have contributed the work developed by two teams, constituted as Special Projects of the Rectory, in March and October 2004, the Gabinete do Paço das Escolas and the Gabinete de Candidatura à UNESCO, in order to develop the application process.
Methodologically, this work is based on documental and bibliographical search and review, providing its articulation with the actions and rationale of the key players, due to their main role, on several perspectives.
