The political turmoil of the period 1820-1834 affected the entire country. The purpose of this publication is to make known the political behavior of the elites of a municipality in the interior, Castelo Branco, between 1828 and 1834. This article will try to answer the following questions: 1. What was the composition of the municipal elite in Castelo Branco in the Ancien Régime? 2. How did the liberal revolution and the counter-revolution change the model for recruiting local government positions? 3rd How did the division of the local elite take place between 1828 and 1834? And 4th, how this division conditioned access to municipal offices. In reality, this period was marked by a social opening in access to municipal offices and by the political division between the main families in the county, reaching its climax during Miguelismo, a period in which liberals emigrated or were imprisoned, preponderating the miguelistas.
