Abstract

The aim of the present study reflects a current school reality of sprouting actuality: the annual publication of schools ranking. Some of the factors that can determine the rank for a school are analysed being our goal also to reflect about the related consequences of this evaluation process in the school dynamics and public opinion. We seek to know the reality of two urban public schools from city of Coimbra that were chosen because of their distinct ranking position related to the academic achievement of pupils. In line whit that, we develop a non-experimental quantitative and descriptive study during 2004/5 school year, with ten classrooms that were selected from all of high school eleven year pupils on both schools. Among the main conclusions, we found that, comparing the schools, students do not evidence differences in relation to family variables and instrumental value attributed to family support (affective and material). Beyond that, there were no significant differences in what concerns studying habits and methods and the perceptions of their school performance. However, we found differences between the two schools about educational and professional status families. The results also show differences between the schools in relation to the student’s perceptions about their teacher’s pedagogical attitudes and in what concerns some of the pedagogical and material school’s resources available.
