Abstract

This paper aims to discuss the importance of motivational variables in the educational context because of the influence they exert on students’ learning, academic achievement and well-being. We limit our review to the achievement goal theory because it is one of the presently most broadly used theoretically frameworks in educational psychology, secondly, because of the importance it gives to the quality (next to the quantity) of student motivation, and thirdly because it adopts a situational or contextualized view of student (and teachers’) motivation. More specifically, it studies achievement goal orientations (mastery vs performance approach and avoidance goals), their antecedents and consequences at the school level, in the class context (the teachers’ level) and at the students’ level.
