The benefits reaped by politicians and former politicians, be they financial or
other, make them a prime target of media. The media are attracted by a good story involving the powerful, as its also eye‑catching to the general audience. Therefore, politicians and former politicians are often in the spotlight and are more prone to political scandal. Data drawn from the press during the democratic period show that most of the political scandals arising concern alleged prevarication of financial nature.
