The particular features of journalists' professionalization present them with specific challenges, but also with singular ways of confronting these problems. Over the past four decades, Portuguese journalists have struggled with circumstantial and systemic dilemmas, which cross different areas of the professional activity. Based on an analysis of the content of the final resolutions, motions and reports of the four Congresses of Portuguese Journalists (1982, 1986, 1998 and 2017), this study aims to map the main themes of the demands of Portuguese professionals. Findings suggest heterogeneity in the issues that constitute the claims of these professionals, which involve, namely, labor concerns, organization and control of the profession, or the regulation of the quality of news information.
