Abstract

In this paper we discuss the visibility of populist actors in traditional online media thought polemics discourse. For this, we analyze how the online Brazilian media G1 and UOL coverage Jair Bolsonaro’s candidacy during the 2018 Brazilian presidential elections. We show that this populist actor mostly uses polemics as an argumentative strategy for agenda-setting. The corpus of our work is based on the content of these two main Brazilian news websites in the period between September 7, 2018 and October 7, 2018, the month preceding the first round of the elections. This work is built on an interdisciplinary approach combining communication and language sciences.
