The purpose of this paper is to mark the recent passing of Elihu Katz and Mário Mesquita, paying tribute to these authors who crossed paths having as their main motive the theory of media events. Firstly, a framework is established on the importance of this media theory developed by Elihu Katz and Daniel Dayan in Mário Mesquita’s academic work. Secondly, we republish the interview with Elihu Katz, published by Mário Mesquita in 2003, in which the American sociologist shared his thoughts on the transformations of the contemporary public sphere – the effects of the Internet and the new media (at the time) on citizenship and democratic life –, and on the evolution of the theory of media events in an environment characterised by media pulverization and globalization.
