Abstract

Adaptation to college has been widely studied, due to the level of problems experienced by many students, which translate into academic failure and attrition. This study analyses the impact of personality, social support and emotional intelligence on personal and emotional adjustment in higher education. Participants were 217 first year students from the University of Coimbra. The results show that there are differences between men and women regarding personality factors – agreeableness and neuroticism ‑, as well as concerning attention to emotions measured as an aspect of emotional intelligence measure. Personality and social support are the variables that predict students’ personal and emotional adjustment.
