Abstract

This issue of the journal Media & Jornalismo examines audiences from an intersectional perspective, exploring how gender, sexuality, social class or disability shape the interpretation of media content. The contributions focus on reception processes, meaning negotiation, and the diverse audience experiences within contemporary media culture.

Author Biographies

Juan-José Sánchez-Soriano, Universidad de Murcia — Spain

Assistant Professor and Coordinator of the Bilingual Bachelor in Communication and Media Studies at the Universidad de Murcia (Spain). He holds a PhD in Communication and received first prize at the 34th CAC Awards for Research in Audiovisual Communication. He has held research stays at several institutions, including the University of Hull (UK) and the University of Southern California (USA). He currently participates in the R&D projects “Production of LGBTIQ+ Audiovisual Content: Agents, Industrial Contexts, Platforms, and Impact Expectations” and “Analysis of Women’s Roles in Communication Research in Ibero-America: Leaderships, Maps, and Narratives (1980–2022) (FEMICOMI).” His research interests focus on cinematography, television fiction, cultural studies, audience reception, and LGBT+ studies.

Rafael Ventura, Universitat de Lleida — Spain

Lecturer and Coordinator of the Bachelor’s Degree in Audiovisual Communication and Journalism at the Universitat de Lleida. His research focuses on the role of media in processes of gender and sexuality socialization, with particular attention to LGBTQ+ representation and audiences. He has been a visiting researcher at San Francisco State University (USA), the University of Antioquia (Colombia), and the University of Leicester (UK). His doctoral thesis received both the Extraordinary Doctorate Award and the prize from the Catalan Audiovisual Council (CAC).

Isabel Villegas-Simón, Universidad a Distancia de Madrid — Spain

Lecturer and researcher at the Universidad a Distancia de Madrid  (UDIMA). Her research focuses on the analysis of popular culture and digital culture from  a critical and intersectional perspective. Her work has been published in journals such as Journal of Communication, European Journal of Communication, and International Journal of Communication. Her doctoral thesis received the Extraordinary Doctorate Award.
