Psychometric characteristics of the Inventory of Attitudes toward Seeking Mental Health Services: A study of women during the perinatal period

This study aimed to evaluate the psychometric behaviour of the Portuguese version of the Inventory of Attitudes toward Seeking Mental Health Services (IAPSSM) when applied to a sample of women in the perinatal period. The participants (175 pregnant women or women during the postpartum period) answered a set of questionnaires (IAPSSM, General and Actual Help seeking Questionnaire, Depression Literacy Questionnaire, Emotion Regulation Difficulties Scale). The Confirmatory Factor Analysis supports the adequacy of the original three-dimensional model of the IAPSSM (Psychological Openness, Help- -Seeking Propensity, and Indifference to Stigma). The IAPSSM presents good convergent validity and fidelity, except for the dimension Psychological Openness. The results suggest that IAPSSM is a questionnaire with potential for use in research and clinical practice, allowing the identification of psychological (attitudinal) factors that influence women’s use of mental health services in the perinatal period.
